After obtaining his PhD degree with the Cum Laude distinction this summer, on December 13, Pavel Mancera Piña has now been awarded both the Public Award as well as the Jury Award of the van Swinderen Prijs of the Royal Physical Society (KNG) at a ceremony at the Forum in Groningen. The evening involved four recent Cum Laude PhD laureates selected from the medical and science faculty of the university of Groningen, each of them given a short presentation on their thesis for the members of the KNG. Pavel's presentation clearly stood out in terms of presenting the interesting and important results he has obtained, and bringing over the excitement of doing fundamental science. Well deserved awards for Pavel!!!
Pavel's thesis, "Dark matter and angular momentum in nearby disc galaxies", is partly based on observations done with the Westerbork telescope, and his promotors were Filippo Fraternali (Groningen), Tom Oosterloo and Betsey Adams (both ASTRON and Groningen).
