On 14th October Eline Klomp successfully graduated with her master thesis: “Design of a cryogenic flexible hollow hinge”.

This challenging design project of a flexible hinge able to accommodate large angular displacement, was a collaboration between the University of Twente and the NOVA group.

The aim of replacing ball bearings with a flexible hinge under the METIS cryogenic conditions was pursued by Eline with great dedication. Many conceptual designs have been explored using state-of-the-art simulation tools. A selection of three feasible concepts has been made, exhibiting up to 14° rotation angle and withstanding the mass load of 90 kg.

Prototypes of one of the concepts have been 3D printed and are on display at NOVA in Dwingeloo. Follow-up research on even larger angular displacement can continue based on Eline’s research. Eline’s contribution was a big step forward!

Congratulations Eline!
