We had some nice clear nights the past few weeks, so I decided to try to acquire a colour image of the famous Cas A supernova remnant with my 400mm diameter telescope in the back garden in Beilen.

Cas A is the brightest extrasolar radio source in the sky, but what would we see in optical wavelengths?

In a single 10 minute integration the brightest parts already show, but it needs a lot more to get a reasonable colour image.

So 17 ten minute integrations each were acquired through Red and Green filters, 16 through a Blue filter and finally 27 through a Clear (Luminance) filter. These were combined to a colour image using LRGB combination with the PixInsight software.

Although this is the result of a total of 12.5 hours worth of integration time, the image is still a bit noisy, so a few extra hours of integration time wouldn't hurt.
