On September 28, 2020, Chris Broekema successfully defended his PhD thesis. The defence took place under unusual circumstances due to COVID-19 measures with most of the audience following the session remotely, and even three out of five opponents participating remotely.

Chris did very well and appeared to be quite relaxed under the circumstances. In his laudatio to the Jonghe Doctor, one of his promotors, Prof. Van Nieuwpoort, praised Chris for his perseverance during his 10-year PhD project, in which he had to manage his obligations to the SKA Science Data Processor design efforts and several ASTRON projects and work towards his PhD research. He noted that, in view of this, Chris actually managed to complete his PhD in a short amount of time.
